This is the story of Haig Manjourian. He was born to a Lebanese mother and an Armenian father who held a Syrian nationality. Haig became stateless as a result of his father never transmitting his nationality to his children. Haig, a talented painter, lived in Zalqa, Lebanon with his parents and three siblings. At 12 years old, Haig’s mother sent him to a Mekhitarist Armenian monastery to become a monk after his father’s death. He went to Rome using a fake passport, assuming the name of Tony Chehade Iskandar. From 1984to 1989, Haig lived in a monastery in venice and frequently sent letters to his mother. After visiting his family in 1990, he went back to Rome and was never heard from to this day.
